Hindeloopen used to play an important role in maritime trading and had a big fleet of over 100 ships in its flourishing period. Discover the culture and history of this former trading town in the museums and expositions.

Museum Hindeloopen

Discover the glory days of Hindeloopen during the Golden Age in the 18th century. At the museum you will get an impression of its traditional costume, interior design, artistically painted furniture, shipping industry and the town’s history.

Opening hours 1 April – 1 November:
Mon to Fri: 11 am – 5 pm
Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays: 1.30 pm – 5 pm
Off season by appointment.

Eerste Friese Schaatsmuseum

This museum on ice-skating possesses the world’s largest and most varied skates collection (from as early as the 9th century). It gives the complete story of the famous Frisian ‘Elfstedentocht’ (Eleven Cities Tour) over the years. The exposition includes an original skating workshop, an authentic ‘koek- en zopietent’ (a wooden, roofed stall with refreshments, especially hot chocolate) as well as antique sleighs. Videos are shown about the manufacture of skates and old film footage on former Eleven Cities Tours give you a good impression of this popular event.

Mon to Sat: 10 am – 6 pm
Sundays: 1 pm – 5 pm.

Exposition of  IJsselmeer fishing

At the quayside of the old Hindeloopen harbour is an exhibition space with various kinds of footage on the development of fishing since the early 20th century. The exposition is free of charge. For opening hours, please call 06-43642624.
